Who actually votes in a business award or city poll?
The people who already know you, plus the people they tell. In local and B2B awards the voter is rarely a stranger scrolling a feed. It is a regular customer, a colleague, a supplier, a neighbour or a member of a club your business supports.
This changes the work. You are not trying to build an audience from nothing; you are organizing the goodwill you already have so it shows up before the deadline.
Five groups, five different asks
- Customers: the strongest group. They respond to a personal note from someone they have dealt with.
- Staff: they will help if asked clearly and given a reason, but should never be pressured.
- Suppliers and partners: a short message from a named contact, in a professional tone.
- Local communities: neighbourhood groups, clubs and associations, approached through their admins.
- Professional networks: for B2B awards, colleagues and peers who know your work.
We list who is in each group, how you reach them now, and which channel suits each one. The usual mix is email for customers, a staff message, Facebook and community groups for locals, and LinkedIn for professional awards.
How do voting and review mechanics change the plan?
They decide what you ask people to do, so we read them before writing a word. Business awards use several mechanisms, and some combine them.
| Mechanic | What a supporter does | What it means for the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Public vote | Votes for your business on the award page | Make the page easy to find and the steps clear |
| Nomination, then vote | Nominates first, votes after shortlist | Two separate asks, at different times |
| Customer reviews or testimonials | Writes about their own experience | Ask for honest words only; never script them |
| Judged panel | Nothing; judges score the submission | Prepare the submission and supporting evidence well |
| Public vote plus judges | Both | Serve the panel with the entry text and the public with the ask |
A firm line on reviews
Where an award counts reviews or testimonials, we ask your customers to write what they truly think and we never write, post or buy reviews for you. Reviews of that kind are exactly what organizers look for, and they harm a business in a way a lost award does not.
Protection steps matter too. If the poll requires an email confirmation, registration or a captcha, we tell customers in advance; see the notes on email verification and registration and login. If votes are limited per network, staff should know what that means, and we never help anyone get around a limit; read more on IP and device limits.
How do you turn customers and staff into supporters?
You make the request easy to see, easy to understand and easy to complete, in places customers already look. We build a small set of prompts and spread them across the contest.
In person and in print
- A counter card or table sign with a short code that leads to the voting page.
- A line at the foot of invoices, receipts or delivery notes.
- A short spoken thank-you from staff when a customer says they enjoyed the service, with the card in hand.
By email and message
Customers who agreed to hear from you can receive a short note with the voting steps. Community, email and messenger outreach covers the consent rules: we use only your own opt-in list, and we do not send to purchased lists or contact strangers. The email promotion guide explains the channel itself.
On social channels
A pinned post, a few reminders and a final-days note on the channels your customers actually use. Copy that sounds like the owner, not an agency, performs best, and our creative and copy service can write it. For the first drafts, the templates for asking people to vote are a good starting point.
Staff should be invited and thanked, never required. A requirement can look like pressure to an organizer and to the staff themselves.
When do paid ads or local creators make sense for an award?
They make sense when your own audience is smaller than the competition's, when the rules allow outside promotion, and when voting is simple enough for a newcomer to finish. Otherwise, effort is better spent on the people who already know you.
Paid ads
Paid promotion can reach people in your city or sector by location and interest, and remind visitors who have already seen your entry. It is a supporting tool, not the main one. Ad spend is paid to the platform and invoiced apart from our fee.
Local creators and community voices
A well-known local food writer, a trade blogger or a community page can introduce your business to people who trust them. We vet them by audience fit and require any paid post to say it is paid; see creator outreach.
A rule for deciding
If your list of customers and contacts is large and warm, begin with them and add paid reach only in the final days. If it is small, start a modest test earlier. The rules and risk consulting service helps with the choice, and the calendar shows how weeks are usually divided.
What should a business prepare before an award campaign starts?
Prepare the award link and rules, the exact link to your nomination or listing, the deadline, a list of the groups you can reach and how, and any permission the organizer requires for using its logo or badge. Name one person on your side who answers questions during the poll.
The plan cannot control who else is in the category, how many customers the other businesses have, or what the organizer decides if it audits the votes. We do not promise a win, a ranking or a number of votes; we promise a clear plan, honest reporting and respect for the rules. If the terms forbid outside promotion, we tell you before you spend anything and decline the project.
Send the details through the free contest analysis and we will return the rules read, a plan for each group of supporters and a written quote.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't all my staff vote from the shop network?
Some polls count one vote per connection or device. If yours does, votes from a shared network may not all count, and staff should know before they try. We explain the limit in your plan and never help anyone get around it. Follow the organizer's rules on how people may vote.
Can you write customer reviews for my business?
No. We never write, post or buy reviews. If an award counts customer words, we help you ask real customers to write honestly about their own experience, and we leave the wording to them. Anything else damages trust and risks removal from the contest.
Is it acceptable to offer customers a discount for voting?
Only if the award's terms allow it, and many do not. We read the terms first. Where inducements are forbidden or unclear, we advise against them and suggest a thank-you after voting that is not tied to the result, or no reward at all.
Does a B2B award need a different approach from a local poll?
Yes. A B2B award leans on professional networks, client contacts and well-written submission text, and LinkedIn and email do more of the work. A local poll leans on customers, neighbourhood groups and in-person prompts. We adjust the channels and the tone to the voters.
What if a competitor appears to be getting a surprising number of votes?
Report your concern to the organizer, who has the means to audit votes. We do not respond with tactics of our own, and we keep a record of what we ran so you can answer questions about your entry. Your campaign stays on the rules.
How much does support for a business award cost?
The quote depends on the length of the poll, the channels, the amount of writing and design, and whether ads are used. We give it on request and confirm it in writing before work starts, with ad spend, where used, invoiced separately.
Will your plan get my business first place?
We cannot promise first place, a ranking or a number of votes, because the field and the voters are outside our control. We promise the agreed plan, delivered and reported honestly, and we tell you early if the terms or the field make the effort poor value.
