Is WhatsApp the right place to ask for contest votes?
It is the right place when the people you would ask already know you. WhatsApp is a close channel: your message lands next to a note from a friend, so it only works from a sender the reader expects. That makes it strong for reminding supporters and weak for finding new ones.
Two surfaces matter for a contest entry:
| Surface | Who receives it | Why they receive it | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel | Followers who chose to follow it | They joined to see your updates | Campaign updates, deadline reminders, a thank-you |
| Opt-in contact list | People who agreed to hear from you | They said yes, in writing or by reply | A personal, direct vote request |
Decide before you build anything
- You already run a channel, or hold a list of people who asked for your updates: WhatsApp earns a place in the plan.
- You have neither: do not build a list in the last week of a contest. Use paid promotion to find new supporters, and invite only those who want to follow you into WhatsApp afterwards.
- The contest rules limit outside promotion: we read them first. The rules and risk check shows what we look for.
If WhatsApp turns out to be the wrong tool for your voters, the platform guides point to better channels.
What counts as consent for a WhatsApp contact list?
Consent means a person told you, clearly, that they want messages from you about this kind of thing. A number saved in your phone is not consent, and neither is a number someone passed along.
What we accept as an opt-in
- A reply such as "yes, send me updates" to a message you sent first.
- A sign-up form on your site that says the messages come through WhatsApp.
- A customer or club member who asked, in person, to be told about the contest, noted with the date.
What we do not accept
We do not message numbers from purchased, scraped or shared lists. We do not add people to groups without asking them first. We do not send one text to a whole phone book. If a list cannot show where each name came from, we leave it out and the plan works with what remains.
What we keep on record
For each list we write a short note: where the names came from, what they agreed to and the date. Every message carries a plain way to say stop. Someone who answers stop is removed before the next send and is not asked again. The lists you own stay yours, and we hand back the cleaned version at the end. This is the same principle as our no-bots policy: every contact is a real person who chose to be there.
How does a WhatsApp channel carry a contest campaign?
A channel carries a campaign as a short series of posts to people who follow it. Because followers joined voluntarily, you can post several times in a contest without it feeling like pressure, as long as each post gives them something new.
A sequence that suits most entries
- Introduce the entry. Who you are, what you entered, why it matters to you, and one link.
- Explain the voting steps. If the contest asks for an email confirmation or a code sent by text, say so before people click. Our guides on email verification and phone or SMS verification show how those checks change the message.
- Share something new. A photo, a clip, a note from someone who backs you.
- Remind near the deadline. One calm message, then one on the last day.
- Say thank you. After the contest closes, with the result whatever it is.
What we leave out
No daily nagging, no identical text in every post, no pressure on people to forward. A follower who feels pushed leaves, and a channel with fewer followers carries less on the day it matters. A channel resembles a broadcast list on Telegram, and the pacing lessons carry over. The seven, fourteen and thirty day calendar gives the rhythm we start from.
What goes into a WhatsApp vote request people actually answer?
A good request is short, personal and has one link. People read it on a phone between other things, so every extra sentence costs a vote.
The anatomy
- Open with why you are writing to this person, in their terms.
- Say what you entered, in one sentence.
- Give one link, straight to the entry.
- Tell them the steps they will meet, so nothing surprises them.
- Name the deadline, with the time zone.
- Close with an easy way to say stop.
An illustrative example, not a real client
Hi Maria, you asked me to tell you when my photo went into the city contest, so here it is. Voting needs a confirmation email, which can land in your spam folder. Link: (entry link here). It closes on Friday evening. Reply STOP and I will not write again.
Before anything is sent
- Is every recipient someone who agreed to hear from you?
- Does it read as if a person wrote it, not a mailing?
- Does the link go to the entry, and does its tracking tag tell us which audience it was for?
The templates for asking people to vote on WhatsApp give you more wording to start from, and the creative and copy service covers writing versions for different audiences.
How does CoinMarketing Pro run and report a WhatsApp contest push?
We write the messages, agree the audiences and send times with you, and report every send. You stay the sender: messages go out from your channel or your number, because recipients agreed to hear from you, not from us.
What you receive
- A consent note for each audience.
- Drafts for the introduction, the voting steps, the reminders and the thank-you, each approved by you.
- A tracking link for each audience, so clicks can be told apart.
- A send log with date, audience and wording.
- A count of replies and stop requests after every send.
What we read
A personal list does not give you the analytics an ad platform does, so we rely on clicks from the tracking links and on the replies you receive. Where the voting page lets us see completed votes, we match them; where it does not, we say so.
The one limit that matters here
WhatsApp's own policies allow it to restrict accounts that send messages people block or report, and that decision belongs to WhatsApp, not to us or to the contest. So we start small, write only to people who agreed and stop at the first sign of complaints.
Ready to plan? Send your contest link, the rules, your entry, the deadline and a description of your channel or list through the free contest analysis. We will tell you whether WhatsApp belongs in the plan and which consent notes are still missing.
How it works
- Audit channel and listsWe look at your channel and each list, noting where every name came from and what each person agreed to.
- Check rules and consentWe read the contest rules and set aside any contact without a clear yes.
- Draft and approveWe write the introduction, voting steps, reminders and thank-you, and you approve each one.
- Send in stagesMessages go out from your channel or number in small steps, each audience with its own tracking link and an easy way to stop.
- Read replies and wrap upWe log replies, stop requests and clicks, then return the cleaned list and a wrap-up report.
Frequently asked questions
Can I message everyone in my phone contacts about my contest?
Only the people who would expect it. A number in your phone is not a yes. Message those who asked for updates, follow your channel or told you they want to help, and leave the rest. We grow the audience through ads and community and messenger outreach, then invite new supporters to follow your channel by choice.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp channel and a group for a contest?
A channel sends your updates one way to followers who chose to follow. A group lets members see each other and reply, so people must be asked before being added. For a vote campaign we use the channel for updates and personal messages for direct requests. Groups come into the plan only when an admin agrees and the group's own rules allow contest posts.
Do you use purchased or scraped phone numbers?
No. We do not message numbers from purchased, scraped or shared lists, and we do not use bulk-sending software, bots or fake accounts. If a list cannot show where each name came from, we leave it out of the plan.
What happens when someone replies STOP?
They are removed before the next send and never asked again, even if the deadline is close. Every message carries a plain way to opt out, and we count stop requests in the report, because a rising number tells us the wording or the pace is wrong.
How do you measure whether WhatsApp works for a contest?
Each audience gets its own tracking link, so we see clicks by channel and by list. We also count replies and stop requests after every send. Where the voting page allows, we match visits to completed votes. Where it does not, we say so plainly and use the entry counter you can see yourself.
How much does a WhatsApp contest campaign cost?
A channel or a personal list carries no ad spend, so the cost is our fee for planning, writing, scheduling and reporting. It depends on how many audiences there are and how long the contest runs. We confirm the quote in writing before work starts.
Can you promise a number of votes from WhatsApp?
No. We promise the agreed work: the consent check, the messages, the sends and the report. How many followers vote depends on how many of them trust you enough to click, which only they decide. We give a projection of clicks based on your list size and label it as a projection.
